Paper presented at the American Psychological Society, Washington, D.C. (May 1997).
Female residents of an urban domestic violence shelter (N=50) were interviewed to assess their expectancies for returning to their batterer or entering another abusive relationship. Subjective risk assessments were found to be independent of known objective risk factors. The results also indicated that the women perceived themselves to be at less risk for returning to their batterer or entering another abusive relationship as compared to “most battered women”. This optimistic bias was found in both deliberative and implemental mindsets. Accurate risk assessment may play a key role in the development of interventions for battered women.
